Balance Is a Brain Skill, Not Just a Body Skill

Balance is often thought of as a physical ability, but it is actually a neurological one. Your brain gathers information from: Your eyes, inner ear and muscles and joints.

It then processes that information to keep you upright and stable. Balance is a "use it or lose it" skill. As we get older our balance tends to not be as reliable. This is why mindful movement like Pilates helps improve your balance and keep you young.

Pilates sharpens this system by:

  • Improving body awareness

  • Strengthening stabilising muscles

  • Encouraging controlled movement

  • Challenging coordination

Better balance means: Greater confidence, reduced risk of falls, improved posture, a stronger brain-body connection.

Try this balance exercise:

  • Stand on one leg

  • Inhale to grow tall

  • Exhale to stabilise

  • Slowly turn your head side to side

  • Hold for 20–30 seconds and switch sides

This challenges both your physical and neurological balance systems.
