Welcome back to TIMS – Tips, Insights, Movement & Strength, where each Monday we explore practical ways to help you move more freely, feel stronger and understand your amazing body.
Let me ask you a question. When was the last time you thought about your balance?
If you're like most people, probably not very often. Until...You wobble while putting on your socks, you feel unsteady walking on uneven ground, you reach for something high and suddenly lose your confidence. Balance is one of those wonderful things we rarely appreciate until it starts becoming more difficult.
But here's something many people don't realise. Good balance isn't just about your feet. It isn't even just about your muscles. Believe it or not, your breathing has an important part to play too.

Balance Is a Team Effort
People often imagine balance as something controlled by the legs. Strong legs certainly help.
But balance actually depends on several body systems working together.
Your eyes tell your brain where you are.
Your inner ears help detect movement.
Your feet constantly send information about the ground beneath you.
Your muscles make tiny adjustments every second.
And quietly supporting all of this...
Your breathing helps provide the stable foundation your body needs. It's an incredible example of teamwork.
Stability Starts in the Middle
Imagine trying to balance a broom upside down on your hand. If the handle is wobbling all over the place, keeping it upright becomes much harder.
Your body works in a similar way. Before your arms or legs can move efficiently, your centre needs to provide a stable base. That's where your core comes in. But your core isn't just your abdominal muscles. It's a partnership between your diaphragm, deep abdominal muscles, pelvic floor and the muscles that support your spine.
Every breath gently encourages this team to work together. That's why breathing is woven into every Pilates exercise.
Holding Your Breath Can Work Against You
Have you ever noticed yourself holding your breath when you're concentrating? Perhaps while lifting something heavy, trying to balance, or even standing on one leg. It's incredibly common.
The problem is that holding your breath often makes the body feel stiff. Instead of moving smoothly, we begin to brace ourselves. Gentle, steady breathing helps your body remain responsive. Rather than locking everything in place, it encourages your muscles to make the small adjustments needed to keep you balanced.
Tiny Adjustments Keep You Upright
Here's something fascinating.
Even when you think you're standing perfectly still...You're not.
Your body is constantly making tiny movements. Your ankles adjustYour feet respond to the ground. Your hips make small corrections. Your core gently switches on and off. Your breathing creates subtle movement through your rib cage. Your brain is coordinating all of this without you even noticing.
Balance isn't about being completely still. It's about constantly making small adjustments. That's exactly what Pilates helps you practise.
Why We Lose Confidence
As we get older, many people begin to lose confidence in their balance. Sometimes that's because they've had a fall. Sometimes it's because they simply don't trust their body as much as they used to.
My Dad turned 90 this year. He's in Amazing shape, still going to the gym and walking a lot. But recently he had a fall and started using a walking stick. His confidence was knocked.
A few months later, he started specifically training his legs at the gym; getting the muscles stronger. Now he doesn't need the walking stick and it sits in a corner in the closet.
The natural response is often to move less. Unfortunately, moving less can make balance worse. The great thing about Pilates is that it encourages you to challenge your balance safely. Little by little. Step by step. Confidence grows because your body begins reminding you what it's capable of.
Better Balance Isn't Just About Preventing Falls
When people hear the word "balance," they often think about preventing falls. Of course that's important. But balance affects so much more than that.
Good balance helps you:
Walk with confidence
Climb stairs more comfortably
Reach for high cupboards
Step over obstacles
Play with grandchildren
Enjoy gardening
Carry shopping more easily
It's one of those hidden skills that quietly supports almost everything we do.
Did You Know?
Your feet contain thousands of nerve endings that constantly send information to your brain about the surface beneath you. That's one reason why we spend time in Pilates becoming more aware of how our feet connect with the floor. Healthy balance really does begin from the ground up.
Try This Today
While brushing your teeth, try standing with your feet hip-width apart.
Notice your breathing. Can you keep it slow and relaxed?
Now gently shift your weight from one foot to the other. Feel how your body automatically adjusts.
You're not forcing balance. You're allowing it to happen.
These tiny moments of awareness build confidence over time.
Pilates Gives You More Than Strong Muscles
People often expect Pilates to improve strength or flexibility. And it certainly does. But one of the greatest gifts Pilates offers is confidence. Confidence to move.Confidence to bend. Confidence to reach. Confidence to trust your body again.
When you combine good breathing with improved balance and core stability, everyday life often feels easier. That's far more valuable than touching your toes.
Final Thoughts
Balance isn't something we're born with and then keep forever. Like strength and flexibility, it's something we continue to develop throughout our lives. The encouraging news is that your body loves learning. Every time you practise moving with awareness, breathing calmly and trusting your body, you're strengthening skills that support you every single day. Your breath may seem like a small part of the picture. In reality, it's helping to create the stable foundation that allows everything else to happen.
So the next time you stand on one leg, climb a flight of stairs or simply pause to notice your posture...Take a slow breath. Your body will thank you for it.
Move well. Breathe deeply. Be kind to your body.
It carries you through every day.
