What is back pain and why is it so common?

Back pain is a common issue that most people experience at some point in their lives. It’s basically any ache, tension, or stiffness you feel in your back. This pain can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain that makes it hard to move. It can be at the top, middle, bottom or sides of your back.

Seems like everyone complains about back pain. Why is it so common?

  • Poor Posture: Slouching at your desk, hunching over your phone, or sitting for long periods can strain your back muscles.

  • Lack of Exercise: If your back muscles are weak, they might not support your spine properly, leading to pain when trying to get fitter.

  • Lifting Heavy Objects: Lifting things incorrectly can cause strains or injuries to your back. Lifting heavy weight when you aren't strong enough to support it can also lead to injury or pain.

  • Injuries: Accidents, falls, or sports injuries can damage your back.

  • Aging: As you get older, your spine and muscles can wear down, leading to conditions like arthritis or herniated discs.

  • Stress: Believe it or not, stress can cause your muscles to tighten up, including those in your back, which can lead to pain.

  • Medical Conditions: Sometimes, back pain is due to underlying health issues like kidney stones, infections, or scoliosis.

Because our back supports our body’s movements and carries a lot of weight, it’s no surprise that so many things can cause pain/discomfort. Taking care of your back with good posture, regular exercise, and being mindful of how you lift and carry things can help keep back pain at bay and increase your back's longevity.
