How is Pilates Therapy different from Pilates classes?

Pilates Therapy and a Pilates class serve different purposes and are structured differently, even though both are related to physical health and rehabilitation.

While Pilates Therapy and Pilates classes both offer health benefits, Pilates Therapy sessions are one-to-one and held in a private studio or centre. Pilates classes are taught in groups, not individualised and generally acceptable for many abilities.

Pilates Therapy

Definition

  • Pilates Therapy focuses on assessing, managing, and treating individuals with movement disorders, injuries, or physical impairments. It is personalised and involves one-to-one sessions with a trained Pilates Therapist.

Goals

  • The main goals of Pilates Therapy are to alleviate pain, improve mobility, restore function, and prevent further injury.

Approach

  • A Pilates Therapist assesses the client’s condition through a physical examination.

  • Treatment plans are tailored to each individual’s specific needs and conditions.

Techniques used may include Pilates, massage, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, exercises, education and advice on posture and movement.

Setting

  • Pilates Therapy is provided in various settings such as Pilates studios and clinics and rehabilitation centres.

Pilates Class

Definition

  • A Pilates class is a group session that focuses on exercises and activities designed to improve physical fitness, strength, flexibility, and overall well-being. It may or may not be lead by a Pilates Therapist.

Goals

  • The goals of a Pilates class can include general fitness, strengthening specific muscle groups, improving flexibility, and sometimes addressing specific musculoskeletal issues in a group setting.

Approach

  • Classes typically involve a set of exercises and activities that all participants follow.

  • While the exercises may be beneficial for certain conditions, they are not tailored to the specific needs of each individual participant.

  • Classes can vary in intensity and focus and cater for conditions like arthritis and back pain.

Setting

  • Pilates classes are often held in private Pilates studios, gyms, community centres, rehabilitation facilities, or even online.

Professionals

  • Classes can be led by various fitness professionals, including Pilates Therapists and others with Pilates training certificates.

In summary, while both Pilates Therapy and Pilates classes aim to improve physical health, they differ significantly in terms of personalization, goals, settings, and the professionals involved.
