What Do You Expect?

January hibernation is over and it's now time to move a bit.

Every year people hit the gyms in the new year to lose weight, tone up and work off all the Christmas excess.

But so often that gym membership doesn't get used after the first couple of weeks. So what happened?

When you start exercising or try out a new type of exercise, it's always good to know what you want to get from it.

When new people come to my Pilates classes they often say they want to be more flexible, have a stronger core or less back pain.

But how does that translate. What are they really saying? Let's take flexibility. It's more than just being able to touch your toes. People who want more flexibility often suffer when they sit for long periods of time, can't sit on the floor comfortably, have muscle aches.

So when someone says they want to be more flexible, I wonder why. Sometimes they want to play on the floor with their children or grandchildren, or they want to bend down and pick up a child, or get out of bed without aching. All valid reasons.

Whatever exercise you are planning on this year, consider why you want to do it? What do you want to get out of it? Identifying this may help keep you vested in the exercise/class/membership that you started. Knowing your 'Why' keeps you going because it gives you purpose.

Good luck!
