What happens at your first Pilates Therapy appointment?

Your first Pilates Therapy appointment typically involves several key steps to assess your condition and develop a treatment plan. Here's what you can expect:

  • Medical History Review

  • Physical Examination

  • Treatment Plan Development

  • Initial Treatment

  • Home Exercise Program

  • Follow-Up Plan

Medical history review

  • Discussion: we will start by discussing your medical history, including any previous injuries, surgeries, chronic conditions, and current medications.

  • Symptoms: You’ll be asked about your current symptoms, including the nature, duration, and intensity of pain or discomfort, as well as any factors that make symptoms better or worse.

Physical examination

  • Observation: I will observe your posture, walking, and movement patterns.

  • Palpation: I may palpate the affected area to assess for tenderness, swelling, or abnormalities.

  • Range of motion: I will assess the range of motion of the affected joints.

  • Strength testing: Muscle strength and flexibility tests may be conducted.

  • Functional tests: Depending on your condition, functional tests (e.g., walking, squatting) might be performed to see how your symptoms affect daily activities.

Diagnosis and goal setting

  • Assessment conclusions: Based on the assessment, I will provide an overall picture of what I see, including weak points, tight or weak areas and balance issues.

  • Goals: Together, we will set realistic and achievable goals for your treatment. These goals could be pain reduction, improved mobility, enhanced strength, or specific functional outcomes.

Treatment plan development

  • Personalised Plan: I will develop a tailored treatment plan for you. This may include exercises and manual therapy techniques.

  • Education: You will receive education about your condition and strategies to manage it, such as posture correction, ergonomic advice, and activity modification.

Initial treatment

  • Therapeutic Exercises: You may start with some basic exercises to improve mobility, strength, or flexibility.

  • Manual therapy: Techniques such as massage or trigger point therapy might be used to relieve pain and improve function.

  • Modalities: Depending on your condition, modalities like heat and ice could be applied.

Home exercise program

  • Home exercises: I will develop a home exercise program to support the work we do in your sessions.

  • Instructions: Clear instructions and possibly videos on how to perform these exercises correctly will be emailed to you.

Follow-up plan

  • Next appointment: We will schedule your next appointment to monitor your progress and adjust the treatment plan as needed.

Preparation tips

  • Wear comfortable clothing: Dress in loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy movement and access to the affected area.

  • Bring medical documents: If you have any relevant medical records, imaging results, or doctor’s notes, bring them along.

  • List of medications: Have a list of any medications you are currently taking.

This structured approach ensures that the Pilates therapist has a comprehensive understanding of your condition and can create an effective treatment plan to address your specific needs.
