Let’s be honest: you can love Pilates (or any job) and feel fried sometimes.
Burnout sneaks in when we’re always giving and rarely refilling. Especially when your job is to be everyone else’s source of calm and strength.
Burnout and overwhelm are a real thing and they can happen in any job. Staying on top of things physically and emotionally can be challenging.
So how do you stay lit without burning out?
Here's what helps me:
Boundaries I don’t have to teach all my classes in one day. I've planned a schedule that I know I can stick to.
Breaks Step away. Breathe. Take a week off before your body forces you to.
Your own practice Not demoing. Not cueing. Moving for you. This is important, and for me, difficult to stick to. The Pilates teachers I know do a lot more teaching than doing (yours truly included).
Keep learning Nothing reignites passion like curiosity. Take a course. Read the nerdy book. Geek out again. This is defintely true for me I read a lot for my job, it sparks my imagination and curiosity. Keeps me focussed.
The fact that I love what I do makes everything easier. This is the best job I've ever had and I love coming to work. You may feel the same about your job. But I think we can all understand and have some experience with burnout and overwhelm. Take care of you as you take care of others.
For those of you in my classes, Pilates is a way of doing that for yourself. An hour on the mat just for you and your body. Great way to recharge.
