Cue Better, Move Smarter

A good cue is like a great joke—memorable, a little clever, and perfectly timed.

We’ve all heard cues that make people go, “Huh?” instead of “Aha!” That’s the difference between cueing for performance and cueing for connection.

Some of my favorite cues and what they mean:

  • “Wrap your abs around your spine like a corset” - Engage your core

“Create a spine sandwich” - Engage the muscles in your abdominals and your back to protect and support your spine

  • “Pull your shoulder blades into their back pockets” - Pull your shoulder blades down

  • "Work in opposition" - Pull one thing away from another

  • "Put your head into your stomach" - Curl inwards towards your body vs leaning forward from the hips

But here’s the thing: Cueing isn’t about being clever—it’s about being clear. The best cues are the ones that land. When in doubt, less is more.

Not every cue works for everyone. I try to think of different ways to say things so that everyone (hopefully) has that aha moment where they understand the movement.

Ultimately I want you to feel the movement rather than just do the movement.
